SharePoint provides a powerful web based collaboration environment that allows information sharing, document management, workflow processes and a development platform.
Microsoft has committed a vast amount towards the development SharePoint technology and with each release has integrated the product deeper with its other business products.
Share point helps team members to connect and exchange information. It helps to centralise files and documents normally scattered in individual PCs, shared directories and email folders.
SharePoint is currently available in two forms. Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS) and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS).
WSS is a free download available from Microsoft. With certain restriction on database size and limited features compared to MOSS this version allows you to take immediate advantage of the SharePoint technology and start building a collaboration environment.
